Et si je vous disais que le monde qui nous entoure est régi par des particules mystérieuses et des dimensions invisibles…

Rien n’est moins sûr…
Pourtant, la nature des forces et des éléments qui façonnent notre univers nous est inconnue.
Certes, les avancées scientifiques des siècles derniers nous ont permis de comprendre en détail les évènements qui se déroulent à l’échelle macroscopique.
Mais lorsque l’on s’aventure à de plus petites échelles, c’est comme si nous entrions dans une réalité parallèle, dont le fonctionnement nous échappe.
Dans ce monde de l’infiniment petit, les lois de la physique et de la relativité que nous connaissons n’ont plus cours.
À la place, on y trouve des particules étranges, parfois invisibles, qui interagissent de manière si mystérieuse que l’on peine à croire qu’elles fonctionnent ainsi.
Physique quantique, théorie des cordes, supersymétrie, principe d’incertitude…
Autant de vocabulaire qui tente de décrire les mécanismes de cette réalité invisible pour en faciliter sa compréhension.

En cherchant à sonder le monde microscopique, les scientifiques ont tout de même pu s’aventurer très loin dans ce que la nature a de plus petit.
S’il y a de ça quelques décennies, nous pensions que les atomes étaient des briques insécables composant la matière, nous savons aujourd’hui que ces éléments abritent un incroyable bestiaire de particules.
Quarks, gluons, boson de Higgs, neutrinos, photons…
Il y a de quoi avoir le vertige !
Dire que ces éléments sont minuscules est un pur euphémisme.
Pour le comprendre, faisons une comparaison d’échelle.
Les observations du cosmos nous indiquent que le diamètre de l’univers observable est d’environ 93 milliards d’années-lumière.
Cet univers compterait entre 100 et 200 milliards de galaxies.
De fait, notre voie lactée n’est qu’une minuscule goutte d’eau au sein d’un océan cosmique.
Pourtant, de notre point de vue, ses dimensions sont démesurées : près de 53 000 années-lumière.
Une taille suffisante pour abriter entre 200 et 400 milliards d'étoiles, et sans doute plus de 100 milliards de planètes…
Parmi ces étoiles, il y a notre soleil : près de 700 000 km de rayon.
Soit environ 109 fois le diamètre de la Terre.
Notre belle planète bleue, gigantesque à nos yeux, est en réalité invisible devant ceux du cosmos.
Car si le système solaire était une ville d’une vingtaine de kilomètres, la Terre ne serait guère plus qu’un grain de raisin.
Et pourtant, c’est près de 8 milliards d’êtres humains qui vivent sur cette dernière.
Mais encore une fois, les apparences sont trompeuses, car l’homme est bien loin d’occuper tout l’espace disponible sur Terre.
Si nous regroupions l’ensemble des Hommes qui vivent actuellement, ils tiendraient sur une surface équivalente à la ville de Los Angeles…
Ainsi, en comparaison d’une planète tellurique de taille modeste, l’homme est un grain de sable.
Si cette comparaison d’échelle vous donne un léger mal de tête, attendez donc la suite.
Car il est possible d’aller bien plus loin.
En effet, chaque être humain, aussi microscopique soit-il face au cosmos, est constitué d’environ 30 000 milliards de cellules.
Et ces petites cellules, observables uniquement au microscope, sont elles-mêmes constituées de 100 000 milliards d’atomes !
Ce chiffre varie grandement d’une cellule à l’autre, mais il reste complètement démesuré.
Attendez, nous pouvons encore aller au-delà…
En observant le cœur des atomes, on constate avec stupeur que ces derniers sont constitués à 99,9%... de vide !
Nous pouvons le dire : la matière est donc théoriquement constituée de néant !
Cela parait fou, mais dans ce néant, se cachent d’infimes éléments du monde quantique qui donnent vie à la réalité que nous connaissons.
Et, bien que nous soyons constitués d’atomes, leur nature profonde nous parait plus distante encore que les confins de l’univers observable.
Ainsi, l’infiniment petit recèle bien des mystères.
Préparez-vous donc à voyager au cœur de la matière !
Ensemble, nous allons tenter de percer ses secrets en regardant littéralement, au plus profond de nous-mêmes…
