À la faveur d’un vaste chantier de restauration, historiens et archéologues lèvent le voile sur les mystères architecturaux du Mont-Saint-Michel, un monument qui n’a cessé de se reconstruire au cours de ses treize siècles d’histoire tumultueuse.
Sa silhouette, aujourd’hui iconique, aimante chaque année plusieurs millions de visiteurs venus du monde entier. Comment ce modeste îlot de granit, perdu entre la Bretagne et la Normandie, a-t-il traversé les siècles contre vents et marées ? Refuge d’ermites, sanctuaire dédié au culte de saint Michel, puissant monastère bénédictin, écrin de splendeurs romanes et de merveilles gothiques, forteresse invincible, enfer carcéral, monument classé… : au fil de sa chaotique destinée, étroitement rivée à la grande histoire, le Mont-Saint-Michel a connu d’innombrables métamorphoses qui continuent de questionner les spécialistes. À l’occasion d’un récent chantier de restauration, archéologues, historiens et scientifiques se sont de nouveau penchés sur les énigmes de ce lieu unique.
À l’aide des rares écrits conservés, mais surtout des dernières techniques de modélisation et de datation, ces experts sont parvenus à faire parler les pierres pour recomposer le tracé des couloirs, identifier les contours et fonctions de bâtiments disparus, et débrouiller l’imbroglio architectural qui caractérise le rocher. Car sous ses dehors harmonieux, croisant puissance et raffinement, le Mont-Saint-Michel s’apparente en réalité à un entrelacement d’éléments disparates, dont il n’existe pas de plan exact. Les éclairages des chercheurs, associés à des reconstitutions en 3D, dévoilent ainsi avec une précision inédite les étapes successives de l’édification du site, tout en retraçant les événements politiques, historiques ou naturels qui ont dicté ces restructurations. Traversé de sublimes images et séquences d’animation, ce documentaire de Marc Jampolsky rend un passionnant hommage au génie des bâtisseurs d’antan, qui ont su s’adapter à la complexité du relief et à la magie de ce petit morceau de terre entre ciel et mer.
