Des humains vivaient-ils sur l’entièreté du territoire de l’Afrique australe au Paléolithique ? Dans le cadre du projet "Human Origins", un archéologue et un spéléologue mènent l’enquête au coeur des entrailles de la Terre.
Il y a trois millions d’années, les premiers hommes posaient le pied sur le continent africain. Aujourd’hui, deux bassins abritant des vestiges des australopithèques ont été découverts : en Éthiopie, le long de la vallée du Grand Rift – avec le squelette de la célèbre Lucy –, et la grotte de Sterkfontein, au nord-ouest de Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud – avec, notamment, Little Foot, le fossile le plus ancien et le plus complet jamais observé. Longtemps, la communauté scientifique a pensé que ces anciens hominidés résidaient dans un berceau unique au périmètre restreint. : une thèse désormais réfutée. Pour le projet Human Origin, une équipe internationale de chercheurs se met alors en quête des premiers fossiles d’australopithèques en Afrique australe (hors Afrique du Sud).
Quête fondamentale
Où, précisément, les premiers hommes sont-ils apparus ? C’est la question à laquelle l’archéologue Laurent Bruxelles, de l’Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap), et le spéléonaute Frédéric Swierczynski s'emploient à répondre. Grâce aux compétences hors normes de ce dernier, capable de plonger à plus de 250 mètres de profondeur, les deux scientifiques sondent, de la Namibie au Botswana en passant par le Malawi, les gouffres les plus dangereux du monde à la recherche de brèches, ces "amas de matières minérales qui agissent comme un ciment naturel et protègent les fossiles de l'érosion", précise Laurent Bruxelles. Suivis par la caméra d’Anthony Binst, les chercheurs explorent ainsi les entrailles de la Terre pour percer les secrets qu’elles recèlent. Au fil de leur expédition spectaculaire, une quête fondamentale pour notre connaissance des origines du genre humain.

Pendant six ans, la photographe et réalisatrice Aishwarya Sridhar a filmé, non sans humour, le quotidien d’une jeune tigresse du parc national de Tadoba, en Inde.
Jeune tigresse orpheline à 18 mois, la vulnérable Maya a grandi seule dans le parc de Tadoba, au centre de l’Inde, entourée de mâles adultes. Devenue mère isolée, cette chasseresse tente de protéger ses petits des dangers et des redoutables ennemis − phacochères ou ours − qui les menacent, même si une erreur de sa part coûte la vie à un tigreau. Dotée d’un puissant instinct de survie, la battante fait, au fil du temps, l’apprentissage des lois sans pitié du règne animal, avant de vieillir et de voir sa suprématie remise en cause au sein de sa propre famille. Première Indienne à recevoir, en 2020 à Londres, le prix Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Aishwarya Sridhar a filmé Maya pendant six ans. Une immersion teintée d'humour dans le quotidien d’une attachante tigresse qui défend avec ardeur son territoire.
