đ MTV VMAs drop Best Afrobeats category after Tyla's back-to-back wins⊠#shorts #news
The MTV Video Music Awards have quietly removed the Best Afrobeats category from the 2026 nominations, just three years after it was introduced to celebrate the global rise of African music .
The category debuted in 2023, with Rema and Selena Gomez winning for "Calm Down" . South African superstar Tyla then won in 2024 for "Water" and again in 2025 for "Push 2 Start" â making her the category's only two-time winner before its discontinuation .
The move has sparked fierce debate. Some critics, particularly in Nigeria, had long argued that Tyla's Amapiano-rooted sound shouldn't compete in an Afrobeats category . Ironically, Tyla herself used her 2024 acceptance speech to push back against the Western industry's habit of grouping diverse African sounds under one label .
However, the removal isn't isolated. Nine categories were reportedly scrapped for 2026, including Best Rock and Best Group . MTV has not publicly explained why Best Afrobeats was cut .
đ Sound off below â was this a case of Tyla being too dominant, or a signal that African artists deserve space in general categories? đŹ
