On this day in history, January 15, 1559, England's Queen Elizabeth I, also known as Elizabeth Tudor, was crowned in Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, and she was born into a time of great political and religious upheaval in England. When she was just two years old, her mother was executed by her father on charges of adultery, incest, and treason. Elizabeth was declared illegitimate and was removed from the line of succession to the throne. However, she eventually inherited the throne in 1558 following the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary I. During her reign, she oversaw a period of stability and prosperity in England and is still remembered as one of the country's greatest monarchs.
