A massive landslide in a Greenland fjord triggered a wave that “shook the Earth” for nine days.

The seismic signal last September was picked up by sensors all over the world, leading scientists to investigate where it had come from.

The landslide - a mountainside of rock that collapsed and carried glacial ice with it - triggered a 200m wave.

That wave was then “trapped” in the narrow fjord - moving back and forth for nine days, generating the vibrations.

Landslides like this, scientists say, are happening more frequently with climate change - as the glaciers that support Greenland's mountains melt.

Une des fins possibles de l’univers est le "Big freeze", à savoir une expansion continue couplée à un lent refroidissement au cours desquels toute matière finirait par se désintégrer. Mais d’autres scénarios sont également envisageables, comme celui d’un grand effondrement, le "Big crunch". Ou celui d’un univers qui se dilate si rapidement qu’il finit par se déchirer sous l’effet de forces de plus en plus violentes : le "Big rip".

Or, si de nombreux scénarios se déroulent sur des périodes incroyablement longues, une fin soudaine n’est pas à exclure. Elle pourrait même survenir demain ! Ce qui est sûr, c’est que la vie – telle que nous la connaissons – devra surmonter de grands obstacles pour perdurer. Des catastrophes terrestres à l’extinction des étoiles en passant par l’évaporation des derniers trous noirs ou la mort du soleil, les fléaux à venir sont légion. Combien de temps l’humanité pourrait-elle encore subsister si de tels événements se produisaient ? Quelle fin semble la plus probable pour l’univers ? Spéculer sur la fin de toute chose peut-il également nous ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur notre propre finitude ? Et si finalement tout se passait autrement ?
