The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo on the 28th of June 1914 kicked off a crisis among the European Powers. Tensions that built up in the decades before erupted and in early August 1914 the world was at war. But what happened in these fateful July weeks 1914?

Des forêts tropicales africaines aux grandes steppes d'Asie centrale en passant par la mer du Nord, l’Asie du Sud-Est et les États-Unis, ce documentaire suit des chercheurs qui étudient les épizooties dans le monde sauvage.

Le parc national de Taï, en Côte d’Ivoire, abrite l’une des dernières forêts tropicales du golfe de Guinée, véritable sanctuaire pour la faune et la flore. La découverte récente du cadavre d’un céphalophe – une espèce d’antilope – a mis en alerte le virologue Léonce Kouadio, qui y dirige un laboratoire. La mort suspecte de l’animal fait craindre l’émergence d’une épidémie qui pourrait se révéler dramatique pour l’importante population de chimpanzés qui vit là. Appelée sur place, une équipe de chercheurs venue d’Allemagne vient mener les premières investigations afin de vérifier que l’animal n’a pas succombé au virus Ebola, à la variole du singe ou à la bactérie de l’anthrax. Outre les mouches, deux autres espèces réservoirs, les rongeurs et les chauves-souris, vont également faire l’objet d’analyses…

Les animaux sont eux aussi au contact des bactéries et des virus, présents partout dans la nature. S’il suit en fil rouge l’enquête scientifique sur les causes de la mort du céphalophe, ce documentaire voyage aussi à travers le temps et les continents pour s’intéresser à des épizooties qui ont décimé différents groupes d’animaux : les corbeaux à New York en 1999 ; les phoques dans le détroit de Kattegat, en mer du Nord, en 1988 et en 2002 ; ou encore l’antilope saïga en Mongolie. Frappée en 2017 par une épidémie qui a fauché 70 % de sa population, cette dernière, grâce à une résilience exceptionnelle sur laquelle se penche une équipe du WWF, n’a mis que quatre ans à retrouver son contingent initial. Donnant la parole à de nombreux chercheurs, le film de Jacques Mitsch (Le blob – Un génie sans cerveau) apporte aussi un éclairage sur la manière parfois surprenante dont les espèces sauvages se protègent de la propagation des agents pathogènes, à l’image des éléphants du parc national de Nam Phouy, au Laos, qui utilisent vingt plantes différentes pour se soigner.
