2014 '월간 윤종신' 5월호 'New You'는 2AM의 임슬옹과 함께했다.

'New You'는 오랜만에 발표되는 윤종신표 발라드이다. 올해 1, 2, 3월호가 레트로풍의 댄스였다면, 5, 6월호는 윤종신만 하는 발라드로 이어질 예정이다. 특별히 계획했던 건 아니지만, 어쩌다 보니 분기별로 장르가 묶이게 되었다. 'New You' 뿐만 아니라 다음 달에 발표될 곡 역시 윤종신 특유의 서정적인 색깔이 담긴다.

'New You'는 '윤종신'하면 떠오르는 발라드이긴 하지만, 기존의 것을 뻔하게 답습하는 곡은 아니다. 그는 여전히 변화를 시도 중이고, 이번 호에서는 특히 가사에 힘을 주었다. 이번에는 서사적으로 접근하지 않으려고 했고, 오히려 메시지를 전달하려고 했다. '네가 과거에 어떤 사람이었는지, 아니면 미래에 어떤 사람이 되려고 하는지는 중요하지 않다. 그냥 이 순간을 소중하게 생각하고 사랑하자. 인과관계는 따지지 말고 사랑하자. 누가 더 사랑을 줬네 받았네 재지 말고 그냥 사랑하자.'

임슬옹의 보컬 역시 윤종신 표 발라드를 새롭게 들리게 한다. 윤종신은 2AM의 '잘 이별하기'라는 곡 작업을 하면서 임슬옹을 처음 만났고, 그의 중음을 인상 깊게 들었다. 언젠가 또 한 번 작업했으면 하는 마음을 간직하고 있던 터라, 먼저 참여하고 싶다고 연락해온 임슬옹의 마음이 정말 반가웠다. 요즘 배우로도 활약 중인 임슬옹은 배우 손은서와 함께 'New You'의 뮤직비디오에도 출연해주었다.
