La communion spirituelle est un moyen privilégié de s’unir au Christ pour ceux qui ne peuvent pas communier corporellement. Pour communier spirituellement, il faut être en état de pouvoir recevoir le sacrement lui-même dans les conditions habituelles. Si l’on pense avoir un péché grave sur la conscience, il faut d’abord se confesser, et faute de pouvoir le faire auprès d’un prêtre, recourir à la confession spirituelle. Si j’ai commis un péché, même grave, je peux sans tarder dans ma prière demander pardon à Dieu, exprimer mon repentir ardent et sincère, et prendre l’engagement devant le Seigneur de me confesser dès que possible.
