Guidée sur le terrain par des biologistes passionnés (ONCFS, MNHN, INRA), Emma Baus et son équipe parviennent à filmer la faune sauvage en liberté. Instant magique du brame résonnant dans la forêt embrumée, rencontre attendrissante avec de petits écureuils proches des humains ou des marcassins friands de maïs, découverte de la mésange charbonnière prédatrice de chenilles processionnaires et du renard, efficace chasseur de campagnols... Notre pays est parsemé de forêts, autant d’écosystèmes auxquels s’adapte la faune dans un fragile équilibre. Depuis 50 ans, le reboisement a favorisé certaines espèces comme le cerf ou le sanglier. Mais les autoroutes et voies TGV fractionnent leur domaine. Et la forêt n’est plus si tranquille : en plus des traditionnels forestiers et chasseurs, elle est aussi traversée de marcheurs, VTT ou 4/4.
Alors, quel est le juste équilibre entre les cerfs et l’exploitation forestière ? Les écureuils roux peuvent-ils survivre à l’apparition d’espèces exotiques sur leur territoire comme les perruches ou les écureuils gris américains ? Pourquoi les chenilles processionnaires progressent-elles vers le nord ? Et pourquoi le nombre de sanglier a-t-il quintuplé depuis 20 ans ?
Parce que l’émerveillement est le premier pas vers le respect et la protection, c’est en adoptant le point de vue des animaux que le film répond à toutes ces interrogations.
